This seven-day trip will provide whale watching opportunities, a visit to a First Nation archaeological site, primitive camping and a sense of wildness. We will paddle a very scenic route from Telegraph Cove to Echo Bay and back seeing lots of humpback whales along the way. 

Total nautical miles: 10-12 nm per day, about 55 nm for the entire trip
Trip pace: Speedy (3 kts)
Skill level: SK III
Maximum number of paddlers: 4 + trip coordinators
Minimum number of paddlers: 1 + trip coordinators

9/5 - Cross the border to Tsawwassen BC Ferry Terminal for a 2-hour ferry ride to Nanaimo (Duke Point). Drive up Vancouver Island to Sayward (136 miles) and car camp in Elk Creek Campground.
9/6 - Drive to Telegraph Cove (85 miles), load boats, park cars and launch by 12:00 pm. Paddle to Flower Island and camp. 
9/7 - Paddle to Fox Island with a stop at Mimkwamlis (pay a fee to land). Camp on Fox Island.
9/8 - Paddle to Echo Bay, visit the local museum or paddle out to the Burdwood Islands after lunch. Camp at Echo Bay. 
9/9 - Paddle to Owl Island North, Visit White Cliff Islets. Good chance of seeing humpback whales. Camp on Owl Island North. 
9/10 - Paddle back to Telegraph Cove. Unload boats, take a shower if desired and drive to Elk Creek Campground to spend the night. 
9/11 - Drive to Nanaimo (Duke Point) Ferry Terminal and take the ferry back to Tsawwassen. 


Telegraph Cove is a very popular launch site with ample paid parking, restrooms, and shower rooms. 
Restrooms along the route: outhouse at Fox Island, Echo Bay and Owl Island North campgrounds. Water is available at Telegraph Cove, and Echo Bay.  

Requirements: Participants must have a NEXUS pass, VHF radio, chart, bear canister-preferred. Carpooling is highly encouraged!

Trip expenses: Ferries, camping, parking, road food, gas - around $300 per person. 

Special Note: We will most likely hold a trip-planning meeting with the group to go over all the considerations and details in advance of our departure.
