Route
Day 1-Cross the border to Tsawwassen BC Ferry Terminal for a 2-hour ferry ride to Nanaimo
(Duke Point). Drive up Vancouver Island to Alder Bay Resort and spend the night.
Day 2 - Launch at 9:30 am. Paddle to Owl North and camp. ~12.5 NM
Day 3 - Paddle to Fox Group and camp (two nights). ~10.5 NM
Day 4 - Optional day paddle around John Island, ~10.5 NM
Day 5 - Paddle to Pearl Island or Turnour Island and camp. ~8-11 NM
Day 6 - Paddle to Blinkhorn Peninsula and camp. ~12-13 NM
Day 7 - Short paddle back to Alder Bay (6 NM). Load boats. Drive to Nanaimo (Duke Point)
Ferry Terminal and take the ferry back to Tsawwassen.
Note: the above is just the basic point to point route, we plan on stopping a few times a day and look at alternate and/or future camp sites.
Requirements: HITW trips require a 14’ or larger kayak with bulkheads, PFD, and dry suit (the trip leader may
allow variances). Is there any required paperwork/gear beyond the HITW standards, e.g.,
NEXUS Pass, helmets, VHF radio?
Passport, bear can / bear sack for food (few good food hanging trees at some campgrounds),
VHF Radio (tune to CA frequencies), 50’ floating throw line (CA requirement), boat light(s) (for fog),
Miscellaneous Trip Details
Known access considerations at launch or takeout sites? Stairs, Ladders? Long carries?
With 5-meter tidal exchanges there will be rocky, sandy and muddy landing conditions. Both
short and long carries.
Potable water situation: Carry all water? Water at campsite?
Water available at Alder Bay. Minimal access to fresh water after launch – plan to bring as much water as you think you will need. There will be a saltwater RO unit available that produces 1 gallon of fresh water per hour in case any of us needs water on the trip.
Logistical costs for the trip: Ferries, camping fees, etc.
Plan to arrive at Alder Bay on June 25th. Cost for BC ferry between Tsawwassen and Nanaimo $75-$150 each way (make reservations ASAP), camping fees at Alder Bay about $25 per person (two group camping spots have been reserved for the 25th), daily parking fee of $7.50 at Alder Bay. Voluntary 1st nation visitor donation $20/day.
Special Note: We will hold a trip-planning meeting and possible paddle with the group to go over all the considerations and details in advance of our departure.
