TRIP SUMMARY: Camp in the Banks Lake area doing short paddles in the morning and short hikes each afternoon.
WHY IT'S AWESOME: Spring comes earlier in Eastern Washington. We hope for warm, sunny days and gentle breezes. There should be a good deal of bird activity. If you’ve never been to the channeled scablands, you will be amazed!
DISTANCE: Dependent on the group and the weather but all in the range of 8 nm or less
TRIP PACE: Unhurried (2 kts) Social
SKILL LEVEL RATING: SKII and must be able to do wet exit
REQUIRED GEAR/PAPERWORK: HITW trips require a 14’ or larger kayak with bulkheads, PFD, and dry suit (the trip leader may allow variances). You should have a Discover Pass for parking.
LOGISTICAL TRIP COSTS: We do not plan to make camping reservations. We will first look at the condition and availability of sites in Jones Bay located a few miles north of Steamboat Rock. This is primitive camping with only a vault toilet available. $12/night/site.
If we don’t camp at Jones Bay, we’ll go to the main Steamboat Rock Campground which we believe will have space available. This site has modern washrooms and running water. Sadly, it will also have RV’s, generators, etc. and the daily fee goes up to around $20 per night.
FOOD PROTECTION AND POTABLE WATER AVAILABILITY: Bring food and water
CHALLENGING CONDITIONS: Wind is a somewhat unpredictable factor. We plan to paddle in the morning to avoid the common afternoon winds.
DEPARTURE TIME: TBD
RETURN TIME: TBD
