On Sunday, September 22nd the annual Tri-Club picnic will be held at Bowman Bay/Deception Pass State Park. All members of WAKE (Whatcom Association of Kayak Enthusiasts), HITW (Hole in the Wall Paddling Club) and NSSKA (North Sound Sea Kayaking Association) are invited. You will need a Discover Pass. Day passes can be purchased on site.
The event will include a trip into Deception Pass on the ebb tide starting at 8:30am (ready to launch), followed by a leg out to Deception Island if weather permits. Max ebb will be 5.3 k at 10:36am. Not a trip for beginners but if you have some experience, coaching will be available. It will be lively! Bring the usual gear, plus helmets are required and a tow rope if you have one. There will likely be swimmers so be prepared to get wet. Slack is 1:54pm but we want to be out well before then. If you are interested in this trip please contact Gary Penniston at ghpghp@earthlink.netto sign up.
A second trip starting at 9:30am will follow the coast to the north of Bowman Bay with a leisurely exploration of small sea caves, rocky cliffs and islands. Contact Frank Sabatier (franksaba@yahoo.de) if you want to join us on this trip. Please show up at least 30 minutes before launch time and make sure to let your trip leaders know beforehand that you are planning to participate.
If you are planning to skip the paddles but still join in for some fun, you can join us at 1:00pm at the S5 picnic shelter. As usual we are planning to have a raffle (one ticket per club member) and a gear swap so don't forget to bring some cash, including small bills and your extra gear that you would like to pass on. Make sure to have the gear marked with a price and your name if there are questions.
We are renting a shelter including several picnic tables for your potluck items. Please bring your own utensils, plates, cups etc. We plan to make this another near-zero trash event. Feel free to also bring extra chairs in case seating gets tight. The shelter area is located right next to the parking area near the boat ramp, 20 yards to the north.
